Origins (1970s) Irvine Sports Club was formed on 8th
May, 1972, by the amalgamation of the Ladies’ Hockey Club, the Cricket Club
and the Rugby Club. This amalgamation
was augmented – after a period of affiliation – in 1975 by the Athletics Club
and Toxophilites. Aided by grants of
£25,000 each from Strathclyde Education Department and the Scottish Sports
Council the Sports Club was able to construct and in May 1976 occupy the
pavilion at Marress. 1980’s & 1990’s Since the 1970’s Irvine Sports Club
has continued to grow from strength to strength, both in sports participated
in at Marress and in the addition of facilities. These included a Bowling Green and Club House extension
including a gym and dance studio. As
well as the additional Bowling section, Clark Drive Football Club made
Marress their home ground. Currently (2010) The Sports Club continues to grow and
thanks to a great deal of work done by a small number of dedicated volunteers
the club has in recent years became Irvine Community Sports Club
and was recognised and registered as a Scottish Charity in 2009. In addition this year also saw the
addition of Rugby League to the list of sports participated in at
Marress. The Board of Directors aim to continue
with the overall development of the Sports Club and its facilities which will
not only benefit its members but also the various other number of
organisations from the local community that also use Marress as their home. |
